NAIL-BITING

Nail-biting begins at about the age of four, peaks in adolescence and sometimes continues even in adulthood. It is primarily a tension-relieving activity and soon becomes a habit. Some children to make a conscious effort on their own to overcome the habit while many others enjoy it too much to stop. There is no concrete psychological explanation for why children bite their nails, but it has been noticed that many nail-biters experienced some unconscious stress in childhood. It could also be an extension of thumb-sucking, which is ridiculed socially.

The habit can be overcome by adolescents on their own and by parents of younger children by making a determined effort. The first step is to find out when the child bites his nails. Is it when he is bored, tired, sleepy, scared or while watching television or reading? Then check for how long he bites them and whether he bites all nails or only one. Distract his attention and involve him in an activity or a game which requires the use of fingers – throwing and catching a ball, coloring, helping with housework, or just playing with toys. Give him colorful gloves. You can explain to an older child how bad his hands look with stubby nails and how unhygienic the habit is. Reward him after he has resisted the temptations bite his nails for a long time. Slowly increase the reward value. Giving girls nail polish also works wonders. Once the child has overcome the habit keep checking to see that it does not recur because it can, in a situation in which he wants relief from tension.

MANAGEMENT OF BED-WETTING

The treatment for bed-wetting is simple but rigid. Give your child an early dinner with bland food and control the intake of liquids after dinner. Try to see that the whole family eats early without much fuss so that the child knows that an early dinner is normal. After dinner, remind him to urinate twice before he sleeps. If possible the child should be woken up every night a little before he usually wets the bed and asked to go to the toilet. During the day, a rough record should be kept of the gap between consecutive urinations. Gradually increase the intervals by small margins over a few weeks. Simultaneously encourage the child to stop urinating midstream to learn to strengthen bladder control.

If the wetting has started after a long spell of dryness, its cause is more likely to be psychological. It is essential that the parent or other members do not ridicule the child. Explore the various stressors at home, at school, or with peers. Frightening events can cause bedwetting. Spiteful and negative treatment by peers, punishment and comparisons by teachers, severe disappointment, ridicule and punishment by parents, or even compulsions of cleanliness can worse the problem. Rewards for dryness, praise and encouragement go a long way in overcoming the problem. Accidental bed-wetting should be ignored and the overall approach should be positive.

IQ OR INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT

Many parents want to know what IQ means and how it is determined. IQ is a ratio developed to denote the level of mental abilities whether they are superior, average or below normal. It is quotient which is obtained arithmetically. The mental age of a child is ascertained in months by using well-developed intelligence tests. A mental age of eight years implies that the child is doing things which and average eight year old can do. Mental age is months, ascertained by an intelligence test is divided by chronological age which is (the actual age) in months. The ratio is multiplied by 100 to overcome the fractions. An IQ between 90 and 110 is average. A child with higher IQ is supposed to be mire intelligent. Psychologists and educationists have spent years to develop and then to standardize tests of mental abilities. These tests consist of all the major abilities which have been identified as the components of intelligence. The commonly included abilities are numerical ability, verbal ability, abstract thinking, reasoning, space relations and perception with time, psychologists have added more dimensions to make the test as universal as possible. Tests which were based mainly on manipulation and adaptation skills were developed as it was felt that there was too much stress on language. Administration and scoring of a test is also planned carefully and only a trained person can administer a test accurately.

BED-WETTING

Bed-wetting is considered a problem when a child wets the bed regularly beyond the age of eight or ten years. By the age of five, eighty percent of children are dry at night except in illness or during a trauma. Wetting becomes a problem when it is persistent during the day or at night without an urological, neurological or psychological cause. Two types of wetting problems are seen in children: when the child has been wetting from an early age and has never attained bladder control and when the child starts wetting after a fairly long spell of dryness. Bed-wetting sometimes runs in the family, or can be due to food allergies, small bladder capacity or developmental delays (when all milestones like sitting and walking are delayed). Bed-wetting can also be due to unidentified stresses like sibling rivalry, parental conflict and even faulty training. If it is allowed to persist it may lead to emotional distress or other behavioral problems.

Before taking your child to a doctor find out if he experiences dribbling or burning while passing urine. Is there a family history of bed-wetting? If so the child should be reassured that the problem will stop by itself eventually.

SUCKING HABITS

Sucking is pleasurable and helps the young child to relax and sleep. Most babies suck their thumbs or fingers and some suck an abject which they like. Often parents encourage sucking when the child is small but when he does not give it up later they are concerned. Many children suck their thumbs to feel reassured when the mother is absent, but others suck even while sitting on their mother’s lap. Working mothers therefore need not feel guilty if their child sucks his thumb. Apart from the fact that when a child sucks his thumb any dirt on it will get into his mother, the most important consideration against thumb-sucking is the fact that it will cause the teeth to grow out of alignment. Some children give up sucking on their own, but if they continue this habit even in the fifth or sixth year they need to be dissuaded by telling stories of the repercussions of thumb sucking. Die-hard thumb suckers will but give up easily just hearing such stories. You can take the child into confidence and work out rewards for breaking the habit which the child himself should suggest. Don’t nag unkindly but constantly remind him of the possibility of crooked teeth or the teasing he is likely to face. Initially the reward should be small for smaller durations of not sucking. Then the time period should be slowly increased along with the gift to be given which should be selected from the list of things that the child wants. In order to make the strategy more effective, the rewards could be visible but out of reach. When the child sees them everyday, his determination to overcome the habit becomes stronger. Putting your own finger in your mouth in front of the child repeatedly or showing him a picture of a child with crooked teeth also works wonderfully.
